Our campus provides a clinic called
Fred ASSIST where there are many services available, but I feel like it has a
very negative image on our campus. Most people that I have talked to rather
don’t know we have it, don’t know where it is or are embarrassed to use its services.
I feel that if people were more educated about Fred ASSIST, they would be using
it more often. I would like to propose that more education will lead to smarter
decisions about sex and the amount of women using Plan B could potentially
decrease over time.
In order to conduct my research, I would like to make an
anonymous survey to ask students questions like:
Have you or do you know someone here at SUNY Fredonia that
has used Plan B?
Do you know the side effects of Plan B?
Do you know what Fred ASSIST is?
Do you know where the Fred ASSIST clinic is located?
Opinions/comments about the use of Plan B?
I hope that getting the actual numbers and comments from
students will help people realize how big of a deal this is and how important
it is for people to become educated in order to make responsible decisions
about their body. Therefore, the last part of my project will consist of some
sort of education about the options young people have here in Fredonia if they
choose to be sexually active. Here, I would need permission from Fred ASSIST(which
I plan to get) to make a pamphlet or something along those lines to hand out to
students about the services they offer, where they are located and any phone
numbers available for students to call with questions if they still don’t feel
comfortable going there. When going on the website, I noticed that it was very
difficult for me to find much information about the services offered here. I
know that our school most likely doesn't want to advertise this to parents of
potential students, but I feel that it is very important for students to become
aware about once they get here, and enter the college environment.
